Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship
  • Fellows are provided with a research timeline at the beginning of fellowship to support timely completion of their work product by the end of fellowship. Dedicated nonclinical time is built into the fellows’ schedules to allow for completion of research projects.
    • Fellows receive guidance to design a project that fits the fellow’s interests and is appropriate in scope. Fellows should have a research mentor and project in mind by the middle of first year.
    • Fellows meet twice yearly with their Scholarship Oversight Committee to ensure appropriate progress towards completion of their project and to enlist assistance from committee members in overcoming any potential roadblocks to success.
  • Each fellowship class is expected to develop and implement a quality improvement project of their choosing.
  • Fellow work products are presented at a national conferences, mostly during their third year.
  • Previous fellows have utilized the diversity of resources available at the University, pursuing work in:
    • Quality improvement
    • Basic science laboratories both within and outside of the Department of Pediatrics
    • Clinical ethics
    • Clinical research
    • Medical Education
  • PICU faculty at University of Chicago have a wide variety of research interests, including resuscitation medicine, neurocritical care, sepsis, ARDS, post-ICU outcomes, ECMO, procedural sedation, palliative medicine, simulation medicine, medical education, ethics, and ultrasound medicine. Our faculty participate in multi-center studies as well as perform single site studies. 

Essentials of Patient-Oriented Research (EPOR) courses offered quarterly to supplement the section’s research curriculum 

Medical Education Research, Innovation, Teaching, and Scholarship (MERITS) program – available for those interested in pursuing roles in medical education 

The Siegler Fellowship in Clinical Medical Ethics is a prestigious program that has engaged hundreds of participants since its inception, including leaders from this institution and beyond.

This executive program is designed for clinicians and academic physicians who are interested in gaining training and experience in medical ethics. The fellowship begins with a four-week, full-time Summer Intensive in July.
