Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship

Program Overview

Clinical Training:

Critical care fellows devote 12-15 months of fellowship to clinical training, with on-call responsibilities continuing throughout the entire three-year fellowship.  The remaining months of fellowship training are devoted to the development and completion of a scholarly work product.  Fellows receive guidance from early in their first year in designing a project that both fits with the fellow's interests and is appropriate in scope.  By the mid-point of the first year, fellows are expected to have identified a mentor and project.  Each fellow meets twice yearly with their Scholarship Oversight Committee to ensure appropriate progress toward completion of their investigation and to enlist the assistance of committee members in overcoming potential roadblocks to success.  The University of Chicago is known for its rich research environment.  Previous fellows have utilized the diversity of resources available at the University, working in basic science laboratories, both within and outside the Department of Pediatrics, with clinical ethicists, and in clinical research.

Fellows are expected to attend the Department of Pediatrics Grand Rounds each week, as well as weekly Cardiology Conference, where recent and upcoming cardiac surgery cases are discussed.  First year fellows are required to attend the weekly Resident PICU Conference given by Critical Care faculty, which covers core Critical Care topics.

Quality Improvement:

With new emphasis on the importance of quality improvement in medicine, fellows will participate in formal QI training sessions.  Each fellow class designs and implements a QI project during the first year of training which continues throughout the duration of the fellowship program.
