Academic Support & Reimbursements for Pediatric Residents and Fellows (AY2026–2027)

The University of Chicago Department of Pediatrics is proud to offer a comprehensive set of academic benefits and reimbursements to support your growth as a clinician and scholar. Through a combination of Collective Bargaining Agreement provisions and additional departmental investments made by the Pediatric Medical Education Office, residents and fellows have access to meaningful financial support for licensure, examinations, professional development, conference participation, wellbeing, and more.

Vacation All residents/fellows receive four-weeks of paid vacation per academic year
Sick Leave All residents/fellows receive five days of paid sick leave per academic year
Leave of Absence All residents/fellows are eligible for six-weeks paid medical leave (30 days) for maternity-related purposes or required medical care, including mental health
Parental Leave All residents/fellows are eligible for up to six-weeks paid leave (30 days) for parental purposes, including paternal leave, non-birthing parent leave, adoption, or fostering care.  For a birthing parent, this is in addition to the paid medical leave

The Medical Center provides medical malpractice liability coverage for all residents for activities performed in connection with assigned duties as a resident at the University of Chicago and at off-site rotations with prior written approval. The coverage is a composite of self-retained coverage funded by a composite of self-retained coverage funded by a trust fund and purchased excess commercial insurance.

  • 50% tuition remission for dependent children at University of Chicago Lab School
  • 50% tuition remission for two (2) classes per quarter for resident/fellow spouses, civil union partners, and dependent children up to 26 years old
