PreSET Governance

The Center for the Science of Early Trajectories (SET) will promote and foster multidisciplinary scholarship and team science focused on preterm and early infant development to improve outcomes and optimize development across the life course. The PreSET platform will support the SET mission by bringing together data from studies examining the microbiome during all phases of life. This data can be used for future research on the microbiome during various developmental stages of our patients both young and old. New data and projects are added regularly, so please reach out to the PreSET team if you have questions about what is available.

The Center for the Science of Early Trajectories (SET) provides this tool to assist researchers. The tool is designed to build cohorts and complete analysis on the dataset, compiled from a number of research studies. Users may access PreSET to view the minimum necessary data to conduct cohort discovery. Users agree to submit an official request for data through the PreSET Platform in the Data Request tab.

While this tool is available to the broader Biological Sciences Division (BSD) and University of Chicago Medicine (UCM), the intent of PreSET is that it will be used by researchers. You are granted a limited license to use the search results for the sole purpose of preparing for a research project provided that you accurately represent it and note that the source of the search results is the “PreSET Platform, operated by The University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois”.

Users agree not to copy, screenshot, or otherwise attempt to extract or store data without the explicit permission of the SET Advisory Board. Users agree not to use the available data to determine the identity of patients, any Personal Identifiable Information, or any other identifying information.

Data is not to be used for other purposes other than what is explicitly stated in the original request. Any new uses will need to be reviewed by the SET Advisory Board. Data also cannot be combined with any additional datasets without the permission of SET. Data and analysis cannot be sold or shared outside of the BSD/UCM without the explicit knowledge and approval by the Advisory Board. If a research team would like to share data outside the BSD/UCM, or outside the institution, the outside collaborator will be asked to sign a contract, affirming that they agree to the same Terms and Conditions and Accepted Use Policy.

It is expected that any research completed using PreSET or other SET Center resources will not perpetuate any systemic health disparities for communities marginalized due to race, class, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender, ability, or other identity. Research and resulting publications should be consistent with the University of Chicago Medicine’s Open Letter regarding racism in healthcare dated June 19, 2020.

Research conducted using PreSET resources will not interfere with the Principal Investigator, co-Investigator, or other researcher’s Conflict of Interest (COI) or management plan.

Users shall report to the HIPAA Program Office at 773-864-9716 within twenty-four (24) hours of User becoming aware of any use or disclosure of the data in violation of this Terms and Conditions or applicable law.

Any non-compliance by Users with this Terms and Conditions, HIPAA Regulations (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), or PIPA (Personal Information Protection Act) automatically will be considered a breach or violation of a material term of this Terms and Conditions if Users knew or reasonably should have known of such non-compliance and failed to immediately take reasonable steps to cure the non-compliance.

Patients consented in good faith for their data to be used for new research. It is expected that the researchers utilizing the data will be fair and honest shepherds of pediatric science.

This tool was created by, is operated by, The University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, United States.

This Acceptable Use Policy (this “Policy”) outlines acceptable and unacceptable uses of the PreSET Platform (PreSET), hosted by the Center for the Science of Early Trajectories (SET). By using PreSET, the User agrees to abide by this Policy, which may be updated from time-to-time.

Acceptable uses of PreSET are expressly encouraged, and unacceptable uses are prohibited. Access may be revoked at the sole discretion of SET for users suspected or proven to have engaged in unacceptable use.

  1. Acceptable uses include:
    1. Determination of feasibility for proposed research studies (e.g., calculating sample size)
    2. Early hypothesis exploration following generally-acceptable statistical principles
  2. Unacceptable uses include:
    1. Indiscriminate hypothesis testing (i.e., “p-hacking”) and other analysis methods that do not follow generally-accepted statistical principles
    2. Conducting a research project or publishing results without the approval of the SET Advisory Board.
    3. Use of automated methods (e.g., scripts), screenshots, copying, or any other method, to explore or export data
    4. Attempting to re-identify patients or determine any PHI elements for patients that are not already accessible in PreSET
    5. Attempting to determine the immigration status of patients. This data point is not collected and is not a part of this dataset.
    6. Disseminating data or results without express permission from the SET Center
    7. Use for commercial or industry purposes, or in any way that directly or indirectly produces a profit for the User or others
