Injury is a major cause of emergency department visits, hospitalization, long term disability, and the leading cause of death of children greater than 1 year of age. Injuries are largely preventable. The cost of injury has been conservatively estimated at more than $7.5 billion annually. It is also the leading cause of medical spending in school age children. Children most at risk for these unintentional injuries are those less than 6 years old, from low income households, live in substandard housing and are members of a racial/ethnic minority group. Injury prevention education and safety products can decrease overall medical spending for injuries.
The University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department treats approximately 36,000 children a year. Seventy percent of our patients rely on federal or state aid for health care. At least twenty-five percent of patient visits involve treating injuries and/or answering parents’ questions regarding injuries and injury prevention. The Injury Prevention Consortium provides injury prevention education and supplies to the families that are seen in the Pediatric Emergency Department.
