The Section of Pediatric Nephrology is committed to treating children with disabling or life-threatening disorders of the kidneys and with complications of kidney disease. Children are treated in outpatient and inpatient settings by an expert team of physicians, nurses, dialysis technicians and dietitians.
The following broad diagnostic categories are managed: enuresis, urinary tract infection, nephritic syndrome, glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis, hypertension, acute and chronic renal failure and problems caused by disorders of kidney function. Specific congenital diseases include hypoplastic kidneys, polycystic kidneys, metabolic diseases affecting the kidneys, metabolic stone disease and urinary tract obstruction. Specific acquired disorders include the hemolytic-uremic syndrome, systemic lupus erythematous, nephritic injury secondary to other generalized diseases and end-stage renal disease. Employed are the latest approaches for diagnosing and evaluating kidney-related problems such as: kidney biopsies, prenatal testing and counseling for expectant parents of infants who may have congenital kidney abnormalities and sophisticated imaging studies including CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Renal replacement therapies for acute and chronic kidney failure are available as well as the latest medical approaches to glomerular diseases and other kidney problems including recent advances in immunosuppressant medicines. Kidney transplants including cadaveric and living donor transplants from related and non-related donors are offered. When surgery is necessary, laparoscopic approaches to minimize the child’s pain and speed recovery are available.
Section faculty members are committed to providing children the best quality of care, training future pediatricians and developing further understanding and new treatments of kidney diseases.
