Dr. Dowell is board certified in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, adult pulmonary and critical care medicine and pediatric pulmonary. She provides care and consultations for children with a variety of disorders, such as cystic fibrosis, complex asthma and chronic lung disease, and she participates in the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program where she follows a group of adult CF patients in a monthly clinic. She received her medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed a joint residency in Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Chicago. She then completed a Medicine/Pediatrics Pulmonary Fellowship through a joint program between the University of Chicago Hospitals and Children’s Memorial Hospital. Dr. Dowell is the recipient of an NIH K12 award. Her research focuses on the mechanisms regulating the plasticity of airway smooth muscle. Specifically, she aims to identify the molecular mechanisms that regulate the plasticity-elasticity balance of contracted airway smooth muscle, as a possible factor in a new therapeutic strategy for the treatment of asthma.
